Take simple steps to tackle loneliness
A new study indicates up to a quarter of people in our region experience loneliness some or all of the time.Across the electorate of Dawson, that’s more than 39,000 local residents who may be feeling isolated. But there are some simple steps we can all take to help. For lonely people, Christmas can be the worst time of year.Whether they are old or young, living in their own homes or in residential aged care, it’s all too easy for people to become cut off from their communities, family and friends. The loneliness study was conducted by the Australian Red Cross and found that up to 5.6 million people across Australia experience loneliness, with men over the age of 55 the most likely to feel the impact after divorces or separations, and young men aged 18 to 34 also at high risk of loneliness.I am pleased to hear that, in response, the Australian Red Cross has launched the Season of Belonging campaign encouraging Australians to take easy steps to tackle loneliness. The Season of Belonging campaign encourages us to take five steps this Christmas:
- Meet neighbours
- Volunteer
- Say hello to someone new in the neighbourhood
- Check on someone who may be in trouble
- Be kind on social media
The Liberal National Government also provides practical support for senior Australians who may be experiencing loneliness. This financial year, $17.2 million is being provided for the national Community Visitors Scheme, which supports a volunteer network to provide companionship.Everyone needs and deserves to receive love, company and compassion, especially around Christmas. For more information and to find ways to tackle loneliness in your community, visit http://www.redcross.org.au/actTo get involved with the Community Visitors Scheme, visit https://agedcare.health.gov.au/older-people-their-families-and-carers/community-visitors-
