THE GRASS will be greener at Proserpine Golf Club thanks to a $145,000 grant from the Liberal and Nationals Government which will enable the club to complete the irrigation of the entire course, making it playable all year round.

The grant, which was awarded through the Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF), will allow Proserpine Golf Club to lift the standard of their course and attract new members and more prestigious competitions to the region.

This is terrific news for the Proserpine Golf Club and golfers throughout the greater region who will be able to come down here and tee off on green grass rather than dust.

The new irrigation system means the club will also be eligible to host the North Queensland Open, which attracts players and families from all over the state. It’s a boost for local golfers, local tourism and local jobs.

Proserpine Golf Club Treasurer Rodney Wecker said the club had matched the federal government funding with $145,000 cash and in-kind support to ensure the whole course could be fully irrigated.

“We get less people playing during these summer months, you can see the course is drying out now,” Mr Wecker said.

“Fully irrigating our fairways will bring more locals down, we can get the kids into the game of golf during the Christmas holidays, and we can attract tournaments such as the North Queensland Open which will attract more people to the region who will spend their money in the local community.”

The other BBRF recipient in the Whitsundays was Whitsunday Regional Council which was awarded $32,250 to assist in developing an arts, culture and heritage plan for the Whitsunday Region.

Under Round 5 of the BBRF, the Government has committed almost $300 million to support 295 projects across regional Australia, which will create an estimated 9,900 jobs during the project period.

This latest funding round takes our total support through the BBRF to $1.38 billion across nearly 1,300 projects.
