Getting Townsville cyclists back on track

Federal Minister for Emergency Management David Littleproud and the State Minister for Sport Mick de Brenni announced today that Townsville Cycle Club will receive funding of $1.86 million to make vital repairs to its flood-damaged infrastructure at the Murray Sporting Complex in Annandale.

This area of Townsville was one of the worst hit during the 2019 monsoonal flooding and a number of sporting groups were impacted.

This funding of $1.86 million will allow the Townsville Cycle Club to fix their velodrome which is no longer safe for riders.

Works will include the demolition of the existing concrete velodrome and the reconstruction of an outdoor, banked, concrete velodrome which will be a state-of-the-art facility.

Funding for the restoration project has been provided under the $20 million Community and Recreational Assets program, approved as part of the joint Commonwealth-Queensland Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

A second sporting grant for Townsville, $155,000 to restore four football fields at Greenwood Park at Kirwan, was also announced today under the program.
