Fishos unhooked from impractical safety rules

Commercial fishers operating small vessels will no longer be forced to comply with onerous safety equipment rules designed for larger vessels, thanks to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority’s (AMSA) response to industry stakeholder feedback.

Vessels under 12m metres in length, that operate in warm waters close to land will be able to follow AMSA’s alternative safety equipment list, which is more practical and better suited to the risks they face.

The Deputy Prime Minister wrote to me to inform me of the changes and specifically credited fishing operators throughout Mackay, Whitsundays, Bowen and the Burdekin as some of those who’s feedback affected the change.

It’s a great example of the Morrison Liberal National Government taking the time to listen to the concerns of those in the industry, those who actually know the dangers they face, and making real changes to ease those concerns.

AMSA has put this alternative list out there, but they are still accepting submissions either online or over the phone until 30th November.

These changes will be driven by the fishing industry, for the fishing industry, so AMSA want to hear directly from fishers themselves.

I’d encourage all the fishos out there to contact AMSA and making your voices heard.

More information on the alternative equipment lists and how to make a submission can be found at www.amsa.gov.au/have-your-say-simplifying-safety-equipment-lists or by calling AMSA Connect on 1800 627 484.
