Training facility benefits Whitsunday workers
MARCH 14, 2016: AN Airlie Beach business is poised to provide the specialised training which will be needed for the construction industry when the Adani Carmichael Coal Project gets the final go-ahead.I visited Whitsunday Construction Training last week and met operators Peter and Diana Utber. They are providing a business service to ensure Whitsundays locals get jobs when Abbot Point and the Carmichael mine come on track.Any worker who wants to upskill and get training in high risk construction, which are the skills which will be needed when the Adani mine, rail and port project gets the final go-ahead, will be able to get that training right here in the Whitsundays, and that will save them precious time and money.Peter Utber is an accredited workplace health and safety trainer and assessor, and he has a lifetime of experience in the construction industry. He spent the last two and a half years working on the Hay Point jetty expansion south of Mackay, and now he has made a considerable investment into this fully compliant high risk training facility. There are not many of these outside the metropolitan area.Whitsunday Construction Training will allow workers to get the required training for tickets in rigging, dogging, crane operation, forklift operation, working at heights, on work platforms and in a confined space.Mr Utber said he appreciated Mr Christensen’s support.“I’m glad we have a man like George Christensen representing our region who is not scared to stand up and speak out for people who are desperate for jobs,” Mr Utber said.“There are enormous opportunities for workers when the Carmichael Coal Project gets started and that’s the specific reason I built this facility.“George obviously cares about the workers, as I do, and my facility will allow those workers to be on the front foot to secure jobs when they arise.“The beauty of it is, the certification offer good career pathway opportunities. These fellows can then immediately gain work in the construction industry.”
