Show pride on National Flag Day
SEPTEMBER 2, 2015: TOMORROW is the day to ensure the Australian flag is flying in all its glory, and I encourage businesses, community groups and individuals to take part in acknowledging this national symbol. The flag is Australia’s foremost national symbol and it is appropriate that we honour its place of importance in our society.Tomorrow, September 3, is National Flag Day, and I’d like to remind schools and community groups that flags are available at no cost from my office. We have Australian flags, Aboriginal flags and Torres Strait flags available though it’s a good idea to give us a phone call to ensure we have enough in stock, and we can arrange to get flags to you.Flag Day celebrates the first time the flag was flown over the dome of the exhibition building in Melbourne in 1901, when Australia’s first Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Sir Edmund Barton, announced the winners of a competition to design a national flag for Australia.Phone my office on 4944 0662 to request flags. For information on flag raising protocol or to join the Commonwealth Flag Network visit www.itsanhonour.gov.au
