Reef and industry continue to co-exist
MARCH 21, 2015: JOBS and the Great Barrier Reef are both secured with today’s launch of the Liberal National Government’s plan for long-term sustainability of the reef.I welcomed the Prime Minister Tony Abbott, Environment Minister Greg Hunt, and State Environment Minister Steven Miles to Hamilton Island to launch the Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan.Despite the constant fear-mongering from the extreme green movement, the plan shows that the reef and industry – whether it is farming, fishing, mining, or tourism – can continue to co-exist so long as it is properly managed and risks to the reef’s health are removed. The Prime Minister also announced an extra $100 million for the Reef Trust, which will fund activities that improve water quality in the Great Barrier Reef.Together, these announcements mean a healthier reef and should ensure that the Great Barrier Reef is not listed as ‘in danger’ by the World Heritage Committee.
