Proudly fly the Aussie flag

2 SEPTEMBER 2016: I am encouraging all North Queenslanders to proudly fly the flag to celebrate National Flag Day tomorrow (Saturday 3 September). Our flag was one of the country’s most prominent national symbols and a source of pride for many Australians.  The Australian flag was originally chosen from five nearly identical designs in 1901, the result of an international competition to design a flag for the newly formed Australian Federation. It was first flown over the dome of the exhibition building in Melbourne, the then seat of the federal government, on September 3, 115 years ago. Since then it has been proudly raised by Australians at home and abroad as a mark of celebration, triumph and solidarity.National Flag Day is a great opportunity to learn more about the history of our national symbol, what it represents and for us all to come together in understanding of how lucky we are to call Australia home and live under the banner of the Australian flag.
