Pearce's mining attack could cost investment, jobs

A SHOCKING parliamentary attack on the mining industry by Mirani MP Jim Pearce could derail much-needed further mining investment and jobs in the Mackay region. It is frankly disturbing that Mr Pearce, who represents an electorate with considerable mining interests, should stand up in Parliament and trash not just some, but all mining companies. His comment that no mining operation in Queensland deserves its licence to mine is incredible.Does he really believe that no mines should be operating? This is from someone who holds the chairmanship of the Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources Committee of the Queensland Parliament. His views are irresponsible and risk much-needed investment and jobs in the region. The people of Queensland would expect a government MP to work with the mining sector to improve safety considering his key committee position in the Parliament.Mr Pearce might want to take a read of the latest statistics in relation to industry safety and health performance. The Deputy Director-General Mine Safety and Health Paul Harrison noted in his report that “… the Queensland mining industry continues to maintain its pre-eminent position as one of the safest and healthiest in the world.”Mr Pearce could make better use of his time focusing on his FIFO review which Labor promised would be done within 100 days of coming to office instead of making ill-informed comments that could cost jobs.
