Labor should be fair dinkum on penalty rates
MAY 29, 2017: I HAVE issued a challenge to the Labor Party to prove they are fair dinkum about cuts to penalty rates, regardless of who is making the decisions.I moved an amendment to a Labor bill, stating that any move to address cuts to penalty rates due to the Fair Work Commission decision must also address cuts in penalty rates negotiated between big unions and big business.I oppose the reduction of any take home pay through changes to penalty rates, whether it comes about by the Fair Work Commission decision or union approved agreements. What’s fair for one is fair for all, and it’s unfair to workers employed by big businesses who have already had penalty rates whittled away. The amendment that I have moved will effectively end the procession of Labor’s bill because it’s deficient in that it doesn’t protect the take home pay of all workers.I will also be introducing my own Private Member’s Bill that will not only call for the protection of Sunday penalty rates affected by the Fair Work Commission decision, but will also restore award penalty rates for workers in major corporates and multinationals. If Labor is fair dinkum about challenging cuts to penalty rates, they should support my bill.Labor should support fairness for all and take a stance against the cuts that have occurred due to collusion between big unions and big business.
