Keeping energy supplement another win

AUGUST 22, 2018: CONFIRMATION today from Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull that the energy supplement for pensioners and welfare recipients will be retained ticks another box on the list of suggestions on energy policy I had put forward. In discussions with the Prime Minister last week, I presented a list of suggestions or discussion points which represented the best interests of the people of the north. One of those points was the retention of the energy supplement, so I am pleased to hear today that this suggestion will be acted upon. This is good news for those people who have the greatest difficulty paying high electricity bills.A number of other policy points I raised were ticked off on Monday, when a new energy policy was announced by the Prime Minister and Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg. They included an explicit assurance to underwrite new clean coal-fired power stations and upgrade existing coal-fired power stations. Tick. There will be no legislating or regulating of the Paris Agreement or carbon emissions reductions. Tick. There will also be a default price for power, and energy companies who abuse market power will be broken up. Tick. These measures are all wins for the householders, farmers, small business owners and manufacturing businesses of Central and North Queensland and I welcome the progress being made on this crucial issue.
