Jobs mission to Japan
JULY 28, 2018: I AM heading to Japan today to meet with key developers of clean coal-fired power stations at the invitation of the Australian Minerals Council, and I'm on a mission for jobs and lower electricity prices. While in Japan I will have the opportunity to visit a state-of-the-art ultra-supercritical coal-fired power station, the Isogo Plant in Yokohama, operated by J-Power.The Isogo Plant has achieved the highest level of power generation efficiency in the world so this is an opportunity to learn from the best. The technology we are talking about, also called High Efficiency Low Emissions or HELE technology, is one of the lowest cost options for power supply, and that’s why Japan, a world leader in this technology, is in the process of building another 45 clean coal-fired power stations.Japan is the largest importer of Australia’s thermal coal. HELE stations need cleaner coal and ours is the best in the world. As Japan already appreciates our coal, and can build the best clean coal-fired power stations in the world, I will be asking these companies to take a look at north Queensland and consider investing in a HELE power station where it’s desperately needed.I will ask them to consider sites such as Collinsville near Bowen, the Mackay region, Burdekin and Townsville for the placement of a HELE coal-fired power station. This is a viable option to lower electricity prices and secure jobs in our region because the Liberal National Government’s National Energy Guarantee is technology neutral, and if, as I suspect, the government is going to adopt the recommendations of the ACCC report, there will be some incentivisation for clean coal-fired power.I've been campaigning for a clean coal-fired power solution to our electricity costs for a number of years. In 2015 I also visited a clean coal-fired power station at Mundra in India.
