Growers keen to consider medicinal cannabis crops

FEBRUARY 29, 2016: I will seek further clarification on the process of growing medicinal cannabis following a meeting with about six cane farmers interested in the possibilities of diversifying into the field.Though it's early days in the formation of the process, I am keen to ensure growers in this region are early contenders for clinical trials. We already have the runs on the board in terms of plant cultivation, and we have the right natural resources in terms of good fertile soil and plenty of water, so we have a lot to gain from the introduction of a new crop like this. There are a number of growers who are interested, and a couple who have done some research on what might be involved. The need for greater utilization of the cannabis plant; for food, fibre and oil as well as medicinal purposes, was a point raised to ensure cultivation was economically viable for growers. We do already have experience in fibre applications, thanks to the work of Oakenden grower Joe Muscat.I will be taking these ideas back to the Minister for Health Sussan Ley, and seeking further clarification on the way forward. As I get more information, I will forward that to Canegrowers so they share through their information networks. The next step from the government is the establishment of an Advisory Council to provide advice on the implementation of amendments to the Narcotic Drugs Act and the broader development of the scheme, including supporting regulations. The indication is that it may take six months to complete this work.
