Extreme greens put skink and snake ahead of workers desperate for jobs
AUGUST 5, 2015: THE Mackay Conservation Group are feeling victorious about their misguided campaign to put the welfare of the Yakka Skink and Ornamental Snake ahead of thousands of Mackay and Bowen workers desperate for jobs, but the court case victory they are crowing about today is a hollow one.I have spoken to Minister Greg Hunt’s office this morning and what has happened here is largely an administrative issue which should be resolved within six to eight weeks. It relates to the possibility that a piece of advice should have been provided in a particular manner, so it’s largely a technical detail that will be corrected. The approval has been set aside at the request of all parties, and it does not require revisiting the entire approval process. While we can’t pre-empt a final decision about the project, the process we are now looking at should take no more than eight weeks.Mr Christensen said any delays were unwelcome, and the reality was it could mean work on the massive project could not get under way for another year.I can assure you that Adani is still committed to the Carmichael Coal Mine and Rail Project, and in fact the biggest impediment to progress is the State Labor Government. They need to provide an Environmental Impact Statement regarding the port expansion at Abbot Point which is another link in the project chain.I will repeat my call to our Premier and Mines Minister Dr Anthony Lynham; ‘can you get on with handing the Environmental Impact Statement on to the Federal Government to expedite the approvals process, give certainty to Adani, and most importantly pave the way for thousands of jobs at a time when we desperately need them, and you declare that you want to provide them’.
