Defence investment brings jobs and growth
JUNE 6, 2016: I joined with Assistant Minister for Defence Michael McCormack and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop in Townsville today to discuss how Defence investment and international partnerships were contributing to our national security while generating growth and creating local jobs.National security is the Government's number one priority, and it was great to meet with locals to discuss how the Government’s investment in Defence infrastructure and equipment is supporting our troops. Not only is our region contributing to Australia’s national security through bases such as RAAF Townsville and Lavarack Barracks, but the capital investment by Defence in the area is giving local businesses a boost through building and equipment supply contracts, and most importantly, it is creating jobs for local people. The Government has also announced a new arrangement with Singapore to rotate up to 14,000 Singaporean troops through training areas here in Townsville and Shoalwater for 18 weeks per year.Part of this agreement is a $2.25 billion commitment from Singapore to upgrade local field training facilities. This investment coupled with the increased personnel in our region will stimulate economic activity, and create direct and indirect jobs for locals.Assistant Minister McCormack said that through the Defence White Paper 2016, and the accompanying Defence Industry Policy Statement and Defence Integrated Investment Plan, the Government is increasing Defence spending to two per cent of GDP delivering on the 2013 election commitment.“After six years of Labor neglect, the Liberal National Government is investing in our Defence and national security agencies as promised before the 2013 election,” Mr McCormack said.“More than 22,000 personnel are based here in Queensland and Defence currently spends around $3.4 billion a year in Queensland.“As part of the Defence White Paper, the Government has committed to upgrading local facilities including enhancing RAAF Townsville to cater for new F-35A Lightning Joint Strike Fighters and surveillance aircraft, improving training areas to support land force capabilities, and modernising accommodation and services for ADF personnel at Lavarack Barracks.“With over $8 billion committed to projects in Queensland through the White Paper, the Government is investing in our national security while generating economic growth and creating local jobs.”
