Correcting the record on insurance industry claims
NOVEMBER 2, 2017: While I personally, as well as my office generally, have enjoyed a good working relationship with the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA), I must correct a few of the comments reported this week on the online news site, www.insuranceNEWS.com.auFirstly there is a comment that ‘an offer to meet with Mr Christensen has been ignored’. This is incorrect. In fact I requested to meet with ICA representatives in Canberra last week, and an appointment was made. However ICA then cancelled that appointment. There is also clear understanding between us that we will both be attending the insurance meeting I have called for which will be held in Proserpine on Wednesday. There was another comment that ‘the industry has received just a handful of complaints’ from my office and ‘they have all been dealt with’.Once again this is incorrect. I would not call 50 plus cases ‘a handful’ and though progress is being made on some of these due to the advocacy of individuals, community groups, council and myself, they have not all been ‘dealt with’, or certainly have not been ‘dealt with’ in a satisfactory manner. There would be no need for another meeting with insurance representatives on the treatment of people who have been through a natural disaster if all cases had been satisfactorily resolved.I will continue to advocate for the people of the north who often get a raw deal from insurance companies, and I look forward to an airing of ongoing concerns at our meeting next week.
