City needs rehab services to combat ice addiction

SEPTEMBER 22, 2015: MACKAY needs its own drug rehabilitation services rather than having to rely on what might be available in Rockhampton and Townsville. The lack of rehabilitation facilities for those with ice and other drug addictions was one of the key points raised at an ice forum I held in June. The State Labor Government is funding additional rehabilitation, treatment and outreach services at Rockhampton and Townsville, as well as a number of other places, but once again Mackay has missed out.To be told that the area is being serviced because there are facilities in the Central Queensland region in Rockhampton is just not good enough. One of the key points raised at the recent ice forum was the lack of a detox unit in the city.Addicts need to detox before they can enter rehabilitation, and I am told we don’t even have a detox unit. When someone needs rehab they need to get access to that rehab facility straight away.Having a rehab centre more than three hours’ drive away is really not a good outcome.I certainly hope the State Labor Government has more announcements on this, because our community needs the facilities to address this chronic issue.
