Addressing safety on the Bruce

FEBRUARY 11, 2015:A $7 million road network upgrade to address a notorious traffic black spot near Bowen is now complete. This work at the intersection of Peter Delamothe Road and the Bruce Highway will significantly boost safety, because there have been too many crashes here in recent years. It would have been only a matter of time before a fatality occurred. The right-hand turning lanes have been upgraded to improve capacity, a new left-hand turning lane has been installed, and improvements have been made to the road surface and surrounding visibility. This work forms part of the $241 million Bruce Highway – Black Spots programme, which targets high risk locations on the national transport network. This particular intersection handles more than 7,000 vehicles per day including heavy freight vehicles, which means any delay from a bad accident can have wide-ranging impacts on businesses reliant on timely freight delivery. We're committed to delivering a safer Bruce Highway, and motorists travelling between Mackay and Townsville deserve high standard transport links. This project was fully funded by the Australian Government.
