$55,000 boost for community groups
JULY 1, 2016: A small business incubator, a school and a long day care centre were all given a boost today with the announcement that almost $55,000 in Stronger Communities Programme grants has been approved.I joined Split Spaces general manager Jarryd Townson to congratulate him on his successful application.Jarryd is creating a business incubator here in Mackay called Split Spaces which will provide support services and collaboration for start-ups and small businesses, and I was happy to recommend his project for funding of $19,800 under the Stronger Communities Programme. This funding is just the beginning of the project for Mr Townson, but it will allow for the renovation and fit-out of a co-working space as well as provide some office equipment and kitchen facilities.I will continue to work with Mr Townson on this project as start-ups like this can provide vital mentoring support to develop ideas which can lead to more economic development in Mackay and more jobs.I believe Split Spaces could be eligible for funding under the $8 million Incubator Support Initiative which is an element of the Liberal National Government’s Entrepreneur’s Programme. Two other successful Stronger Communities Programme grants were announced this morning. The Chelona Primary School P&C have been approved for funding of $20,000 for the construction of a prep/younger student adventure playground and this is expected to benefit more than 3000 students and family members. The Mackay Children and Family Centre in Andergrove has also been successful with their application of $14,877 for their solar installation project which will help them to reduce their electricity costs.
