SEPTEMBER 22, 2017: TODAY I announced that a number of applications for funding under the Federal Government's Building Better Regions Fund Community Projects stream have been successful.Three Mackay community and economic development projects have received a boost of a combined $125,000, and the Burdekin Shire Council has received $15,000 to develop a tourism strategy.[box style="1 or 2"]Burdekin Mayor Lyn McLaughlin: "Our tourism industry is an underdeveloped section of the Burdekin economy, with lots of potential to build on, but development must happen with a coordinated and structured approach. Thanks to the support of the Federal Government, Council now has an opportunity to create a five-year plan and guide the growth of this vital industry into the future." [/box]Greater Whitsunday Alliance Limited (GW3) will receive $55,000, or 50% of funding, for a study to identify opportunities for economic growth in the Mackay, Whitsunday, Isaac region.In addition to that, the Mackay-based Regional Social Development Coalition (RSDC) will receive $70,000 for two projects for workshops, mentoring and planning to support a variety of community service organisations.“Without the Building Better Regions Fund, these community investment projects often struggle to get funding.”[box style="1 or 2"]GW3 CEO Garry Scanlan: "This $120,000 comprehensive study will review all existing data, studies and strategies around projects and opportunities, undertake a gap analysis and identify areas for greater regional collaboration to ensure the best possible economic outcomes for the Mackay Isaac Whitsunday region."RSDC President Marie Cameron: "$70,000 in funding will allow us to work alongside volunteer boards and committees to develop skills, knowledge, processes and strategic plans to build resilience. It provide a huge boost for these regional organisations that provide so much social support with so few resources.
